Christine Lafuente has been drawn to the subject of water throughout her painting career. She discovered the Bass Harbor location for painting in 2011. Lafuente has been returning to the same house in Bernard ever since. The Trask House, also known as “Harbor Point”, sits at the point of the harbor and has a covered porch facing both the ocean and the fishing harbor. This exhibition features views of the harbor and the Swan’s Island Ferry Terminal and shows Lafuente’s progression of style over the past 15 years.
In returning to this now familiar place summer after summer, she has discovered the contradiction in “narrowing her subject matter.” The change in weather, a change in the tide, painting from the porch versus down on the rocks, the jewel like color of the boats in the sun, and how perspective shifts even with the slight turning of one’s head- all of this is filtered through Lafuente’s experimentation in paint handling. This exhibition shows the limitlessness that nature can provide in a single destination.
