Local playwright Carolyn Gage will discuss what happened when 20th Century Fox adapted Ruth Mooreโs masterpiece, Spoonhandle, for a 1948 feature-length film titled Deep Waters. The characters and the plot were completely appropriated and distorted, and this experience marked a turning point in Mooreโs career. The talk will include excerpts from the 2007 documentary, โHollywood Comes to Vinalhaven,โ which includes interviews with the Mainers about the filming on the island.
Carolyn Gage is the author of twelve books and more than eighty-eight plays, including musicals, one-acts, one-woman shows, adaptations, and dramas. The winner of numerous awards, her work is widely published and performed. She tours in her own shows, offering lectures and workshops on lesbian culture and history.
