Ruth Moore Days 2018

MDI Reads Moore!

Ruth Moore Days       July 17-23, 2018

Bass Harbor Memorial Library         89 Bernard Rd, Bernard

CREATE!  Paint and Sip with artist Jean Forbes! Tuesday July 17, 6-8:30pm. The inspiration for your acrylic painting will be Moore’s poem July with technique and tips from Jean. The class is free and materials, hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be provided. Space is limited to 12 adults. Please call 244-3798 or email librarian@bassharborlibrary.com to reserve your space. Due to the nature of this class we cannot accept walk-ins.

WRITE!  Author Martha Andrews Donovan will lead a writing workshop inspired by the poetry of Moore’s Tired Apple Tree on Wednesday July 18 at 6:30pm. Learn about Moore’s style and voice and learn and practice the craft of poetry with a local author, professor and artist.

READ!  Join your friends and neighbors in a community read of Tired Apple Tree and gather at the Library on Thursday July 19 at 6pm for a community reading and performance of Ruth Moore’s ballads and poetry. Join local actors as they perform selected pieces and share your favorites. Celebrate Ruth’s birthday with cake and refreshments. Copies of Tired Apple Tree will be available for purchase at the Library soon.

LEARN!  The Library was recently gifted with copies of Nan Kellam’s journals detailing her day to day life with her husband Art on Placentia Island from 1949-1985. On Monday, July 23 at 7 pm, the Tremont Historical Society will present a slide show, talk and question and answer session, at the Tremont Town Office, with Peter Blanchard III entitled “We Were an Island –  A Remarkably Insular Love Story, both Chronicled and Filmed.”  The talk will describe Art and Nan Kellam’s life on Placentia Island from the late 1940s to 1980s, including information about Nan Kellam’s journals and a documentary on their lives currently being filmed.

2022 Art and Nature Camp: Patterns and Rhythms

    July 25-29, 2022 Ages 7 to 11

Explore the patterns and rhythms found throughout the island landscape. Nature offers a kaleidoscope of patterns, some obvious and others only noticeable upon close inspection. Patterns repeat, surprise and awe when seen from a different viewpoint. Art and Nature Camp will investigate the natural rhythm of nature’s patterns and design. Directors Kathie Pratt and Dawn Nuding invite children ages 7-11 to turn discovery into artistic inspiration! Get close and discover the hidden patterns of a shell, or take a long view and revel in the unifying pattern made by a beach full of multicolored periwinkles. Let the rhythm of the waves or the rustle of the trees, inspire you to create artwork through techniques such as weaving, printing, and collage, tapping into your inner artist and gaining self-understanding and expression along the way.

Camp fee is by sliding scale $25 to $100. Camp runs from Monday July 25 to Friday July 29, 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at the Bass Harbor Memorial Library in Bernard.  A final presentation of campers’ work will be displayed at a library reception on the evening of July 29.

You may register online, print out a registration form to mail in, or contact the Bass Harbor Memorial Library at 207-244-3798, librarian@bassharborlibrary.com, or Kathie Pratt, Camp Director, 207–244-0558 kathie.pratt@bassharborlibrary.com to have a form mailed to you.
