DONATE

On September 22, 2020 the Bass Harbor Memorial Library in Bernard opened its doors to patrons after nearly 2 years of construction and 6 months of closure due to COVID-19. It has been my delight and privilege to welcome you back! With 780 square feet of new space, a completely refurbished back room, updated technology and shelves full of new materials, there is a lot to discover while still enjoying the services and atmosphere that the Library has offered the Tremont community for nearly 100 years.

When COVID-19 forced the library to close its doors, we continued to work behind the scenes reimagining how we could offer our materials and services in the expanded facility with an eye toward safety and a dedication to creative engagement. Our curbside and delivery services commenced in the spring, and our traditional summer programs such as Art Camp and Ruth Moore days went virtual. Transitioning these programs to an online format allowed the community to safely connect, communicate and create together. In fact, Art Camp was so successful that it was mentioned in the October edition of the American Art Therapy’s newsletter!

We are committed by the town charter to raise a percentage of our annual budget through fundraising and donations. In 2020 all of our signature events and fundraisers were put on hold, curtailing our income from the Lobster Boat Race’s food tent, August’s book and white elephant sale and sales at art shows. These events raised over $6,000 in 2019 and support our year-round operations, including the books, magazines, and programming that enrich and inspire our community. Income from donations are even more crucial now as we expand our offerings in our renovated facility. From themed learning backpacks, to dynamic virtual and in-person programming, increased open hours and an expanded large print and audiobook collection, the Bass Harbor Memorial Library has big plans in 2021. Would you help us maintain the Library’s fiscal health by making a donation?

I welcome your calls and email just as much as I enjoy seeing you in person. Don’t hesitate to contact me at (207)244-3798 or lisa.murray@bassharborlibrary.com.

Sincerely,

Lisa Murray, Director

  • The Out Islands Rega…

The Out Islands Regatta with Art Paine

    March 9, 2021  7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Local artist and sailor Art Paine will give a Zoom talk about the Bahamas’ famous Out Islands Regatta on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 7pm. This event began in 1954 as a race between the Bahamas’ rustic fishing and freight sailing vessels. In that year over 40 rough-built wooden sailboats showed up and competed for cash prizes. The Out Islands Regatta has been running ever since, at the end of Lent and before the beginning of the crawfishing season. Nowadays upwards of seventy boats show up, and doings afloat and ashore are extremely colorful and fun! No matter how frosty the weather in mid February, you’ll be warmed by images of vibrant color, and stories of Caribbean Island hi-jinx. This is considered among marine artists the most beautiful sailing event in the world. To receive the Zoom link, please call 244-3798 or register online at: https://forms.gle/upUMxD3WJFxMvHvU8
