Committees & Public Meetings

All library meetings are public with a schedule and agenda listed on this website’s Calendar . Most committees or sub-committees do not meet on a regular basis. These advisory committees gather on an as-needed basis and will be announced on the calendar with as  much notice as possible.

The Library Board of Trustees meets the second Wednesday of every month at 5pm at the Bass Harbor Memorial Library. The meeting agenda is posted at the Library, at the Town of Tremont offices, and at all three Tremont post offices (Bernard, Bass Harbor and Seal Cove) The agenda will also be linked to the event on the calendar when available.

If you are interested in serving on one of these committees, please contact librarian@bassharborlibrary.com to inquire about which committees have free seats. Most committees are Advisory and must seek approval from the Board of Trustees in order to implement decisions. Exceptions to this are the Building & Expansion Construction Committee which has decision-making privileges as voted by the Board, and the Program Advisory Committee which serves to support the Library Director.

Board Development: Identify, recruit, train new members to the Library’s Board of Directors. This committee also creates and disseminates orientation materials and suggests continued board education and professional development.

Building & Expansion Construction: Oversee all aspects of the BHML expansion and renovation project; work with architect, clerk of the works, Tremont Board of Selectmen, Tremont Town Manager and Library Director to make decisions associated with the new construction.

Building & Grounds: Responsible for making recommendations and maintaining the Library’s physical plant as well as the grounds surrounding the building.

Finance: Deals with financial side of library operations, from creating the annual budget, working with the Tremont Town Manager and Bookkeeper,  to guiding the Library and Director with financial advice and decisions.

Fundraising & Development: Plans, oversees and runs the many Library fundraisers held throughout the year. Also develops and recommends actions relating to appeals, bequests and other non-town funds, including the Hinton Estate.

Personnel Committee: Recruits and trains new or additional library staff.

Policy: Develop library policies as needed or as requested by the Town of Tremont.

Program Advisory: Provides support and ideas to the director in the form of program outreach and planning, staffing and refreshments.

Space Committee: Makes decisions about the look and feel of the addition and renovation, researches and purchases furniture, technology, etc.

The Out Islands Regatta with Art Paine

    March 9, 2021  7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Local artist and sailor Art Paine will give a Zoom talk about the Bahamas’ famous Out Islands Regatta on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 7pm. This event began in 1954 as a race between the Bahamas’ rustic fishing and freight sailing vessels. In that year over 40 rough-built wooden sailboats showed up and competed for cash prizes. The Out Islands Regatta has been running ever since, at the end of Lent and before the beginning of the crawfishing season. Nowadays upwards of seventy boats show up, and doings afloat and ashore are extremely colorful and fun! No matter how frosty the weather in mid February, you’ll be warmed by images of vibrant color, and stories of Caribbean Island hi-jinx. This is considered among marine artists the most beautiful sailing event in the world. To receive the Zoom link, please call 244-3798 or register online at: https://forms.gle/upUMxD3WJFxMvHvU8
